Dude’s Search for Meaning

“It doesn’t happen overnight, that much I have learned.”

“What, Lamont?”

“Transformation. Evolution. Whatever you want to call it, but sometimes it’s really fast — comparatively — as in the case of First Fish.”

“Oh. First Fish. May his name be honored forever amongst land dwelling beings.”

“Amen to that, Dude. What a hero! People today are all about ‘makeovers.’ The REAL makeovers take eons.”

“Remember when we were bison back in the Pleistocene and got separated from the herd by the ice sheet?  I was reading yesterday how that resulted in two genetically different types of bison!”

“Lots of great animals back in the day. Remember the Auroch?”

“I WAS an auroch, Lamont. How can you forget?”

“I didn’t know that, Dude. You’ve never talked about those days.”

“We live in an era where admitting to having been a giant cow isn’t going to get you far.”

“Still, all modern cattle descended from the auroch. Do you realize that? Your burger is your great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-…”

“I get it.”

“…grandchild. That was a long era, I suppose I had more than one iteration, but all I really remember is my short time as a woolly mammoth and you driving me into the tarpits. Smilodon my ass. What was there to smile at?”

“Yeah, that was great, watching you flail around, sinking lower, ever more stuck. Then the great moment when we threw ourselves on you and… Well, I know it wasn’t your happiest day, Lamont, but you were very tasty. You should be proud of that. I mean life is all kill or be killed. Sometimes you’re the Smilodon; sometimes you’re the dinner. Still and all, I’m sorry I killed and ate you.”

“Good god, Dude. Are you letting the fruity sensibilities of this iteration pollute your awareness of the true nature of existence? Keep it steady here. You know how the winds of change can blow the human psyche this way and that.”

“You think you’re the only thinker around here, Lamont? Not so. I’ve given a lot of thought to the meaning of life.”

MEANING? Dude! What ‘meaning’?”

“The purpose for our existence. What we are here for.”

“Wow. What are YOU here for, Dude? I mean what elevated rationale propels you to get up at 4:30 and go surfing? I mean, Dude!”

“Out there in the early morning, I get to listen to Mother Ocean, feel the kindness of Sister Breeze and watch the changes in Father Sky. I learn from them. They are my teachers and they tell me that I have a purpose.”

“Oh Dude. So, OK. You have a purpose. What IS it?”

“The purpose of my life is to discover its purpose. Seriously, Lamont. You have a purpose, too.”

“To find my purpose?”

“Maybe. Maybe you have a different purpose. You’re here to discover it. Like, what do you want to be next time — if there is a next time?”

“I just try to live one lifetime at a time. You go looking for purpose and you’re just going to drive yourself crazy. It’s all ‘mate, spawn and die’ and you know that as well as I do.”

“How can you have such a superficial view of your own existence?”

“How is that superficial? It is exactly through that system that transformation occurs. Get real, Dude.”
