O suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October’s bright blue weather;
When loud the bumblebee makes haste,
Belated, thriftless vagrant,
And goldenrod is dying fast,
And lanes with grapes are fragrant;
When gentians roll their fingers tight
To save them for the morning,
And chestnuts fall from satin burrs
Without a sound of warning;
When on the ground red apples lie
In piles like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining;
When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing;
When springs run low, and on the brooks,
In idle golden freighting,
Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush
Of woods, for winter waiting;
When comrades seek sweet country haunts,
By twos and twos together,
And count like misers, hour by hour,
October’s bright blue weather.
O sun and skies and flowers of June,
Count all your boasts together,
Love loveth best of all the year
October’s bright blue weather.

“October’s Bright Blue Weather”

A lovely poem to pair with your photo!
Thank you — I really love that poem. It’s from my mom’s school teaching days and she recited it in October. I can’t look at the bright blue sky with golden leaves without thinking of it. ❤
I can see why!
The perfect tribute to the best of seasons. Wonderful, Martha. 🙂
Thank you! ❤
❤ 🙂
In Michigan, we always enjoyed Indian Summer. In Calfornia we just say, “Dammit! Cool off already.”
Yep! 🙂
Tis beautiful.
I guess you would have to change October to March???
Probably April. March can still be an inferno. Speaking of which, 30c, big winds and severe fire danger yesterday!
😦 There’s a big fire in Colorado right now a couple miles from the “city” where my dermatologist is. October seems to be the worst month — high winds and dry. I hope your fire danger stays just danger.
It is likely to be a bad year since it is so dry. On the other hand, there is not a lot of understorey to feed a blaze.
Here it is bright and blue. Tomorrow is supposed to be overcast and 60% chance of rain. I to travel tomorrow. At least it’s only an hour or so.
